.:: MORPHOLOGY ::. Slightly arched neck and medium length; rather long, with plentiful and strong manes, well inserted in its union with the trunk and with a cervical-facial transit or union with head. Delicate and elegant. Net and never fat, nor voluminous. Upper arched edge from the withers till the nape; and lower fairly straight edge, never convex (deer's neck or backwards) and it must stick out over the chest. ".Tall and proportionate stature, rising up from its start, and diminishing the thick part till the head, to cover with it the major part of the horseman's body." (Marques de Arellano, XVIth century. "...They must be upright and unloaded in front, having a wide neck in its start, and slim next to the head, and it must raise from the chest and not from the ribs; nacreous, well formed and developed neck" (Pedro de Aguilar, XVIth century).

Front extremities with long, muscular and oblique back that is a bigger angle than 55º to the horizontal. Short and brawny, inclined and strong foreleg; long, powerful and well-directed forearm. Developed and skinny knees. Proportioned length cannon bone. Net and clean phalanxes; skinny and prominent fetlock joints; compact hoofs with adequate dimensions, short heels. In the back extremities thigh and buttock must be very muscular. Generally long legs and being at a bigger angle than 70º to the horizontal. Well-shaped tarsus and hock and offering good surfaces of insertion to the flexor and extensor muscular masses. With similar characteristics to the front members in the metatarsal, tarsus metatarsal and phalanx areas. Brawny and proportioned trunk, rather short, with a great distance between withers and belly. Broad and deep thorax. Slightly curved ribs, not "as a cask", although in the mare it is shown a little more widened. More or less straight and muscular back; short, wide, horizontal and a little arched back, harmoniously bound to back and rump. Medium length and width croup, being its length larger or equal than its width. Rounded and slightly sloping, with low start of the horsetail, so this is kept adjoined during March. Horsetail with plentiful mane very often wavy, outstretched and powerful flanks, correct belly. We call back to the area that has as a base the scapula (shoulder blade) and its cartilage, it can be said that it is adjoined to the withers. The Spanish Horse's back, as a good saddle horse, must be well inclined and long, that is at 50º angles to the horizontal. With this back it perfectly adjusts to the rough land, mountains, stones and shrubs where it was raised. Its front hoofs get with such a back a good trunk, and also with it gives its rider more comfort, since the seat is placed backwards he is moved away from the points of percussion, that is to say, from the front hoofs. The good withers are those which have enough surface as for allowing easily the position of the muscles that contract and spread the neck and the back, and which also intervene in the good functioning of back and ribs. In the Spanish Horse, withers must be prominent and long, slightly broad and backwards. Head , slightly as a spindle, with a manifest and narrow nape, (too much in its side direction), medium length, and not short, slender and skinny, softly curved brow. Little clear jawbone. The eye more or less round, being placed obliquely and inclined. Medium-sized muzzle, seeming little size and with bulk nostrils. Medium lengthy and short position ears, with external bent edge; very movable. The Spanish Horse face (space between muzzle and brow) must be long, straight, smooth and lean. The muzzle and brow outline of the Spanish Horse is sub convex, fairly straight, never concave (characteristic of Pure Arabian Breed), nor ultra convex (peculiar to northern blood horse, Neapolitan, French, etc.). |
